Customer Profile Horst Geist

Germany is one of the great car-meccas of the world.  It is the birthplace of the first automobile, the first great super-freeway (Autobahn), and it is the country that has brought us great cars from companies like Porsche and Mercedes Benz to name a few.   It is also the land of the mother of all race circuits, the famous Nurbergring

With all that’s great about Germany, it can unfortunately be a difficult place to be if you are trying to do anything outside of the automotive “normal”.  Building your own Roadster, for example, was all but “verboten”, and there were so many restrictions, that it scares most mortal men away.  Not with our man Horst.

Luckily for other Germans, as well as many future-FFROGs throughout Europe, Horst Geiss was up for the challenge of paving the way for others.

Like many of us, Horst is busier than he cares to be.  The proud owner of a successful welding/construction company, and an active member of an ambitious skydiving team, he has little free time for his hobbies.

Being able to work only one day a week, his build took three years to complete!  In the process, however, he was actively lobbying the German Technical Inspection Authority (TUV) to sanction the car for the road.  His goal was to build a car that closely resembled a vintage 60’s roadster, and with Smith’s gauges, IRS and leather seats (heated, no less) it was a great start.  In addition, he powder coated the frame, anodized the aluminum, and used aircraft quality fasteners in many places.

Naturally, a Factory Five is never really done. His future plans include a 427 FE installation, and an upgrade to pin drive wheels.  We’re just waiting for the autobahn footage…
