Special Mention

John McIver and his Mom!

John runs flat out with Bryan Dobbyns at his heels.  Las Vegas Nationals 2003.

We are lucky to receive a lot of positive mail from customers and friends (and a few natty ones every once in a while).  We have a “happy file” that we send these nice notes to after giving everyone around here some smiles.  We wouldn’t ever try to sell our products by publishing these wonderful and personal notes.  Every now and then though something stands out and we just gotta share.  Here’s a story you’re going to love.

Many of you know John McIver by now.  For those of you who haven’t met him he’s one of the drivers who competes in the FFR-NASA Challenge series.  John was put on our website after winning an enduro event in his FFR spec car (Sept. 2003 What’s New “FFR Spec Racer wins 100 Mile Enduro) John is also the 2003 Ohio-Indiana region champion.

John is a good driver and an even nicer guy.  At the 2003 Nationals, while running in the top ten, he hit a huge piece of debris (rock!) on the track and his car’s rear end was severely damaged.  FFR engineer Jim Schenck gave up his car to let John run in the finals!  In the finals John started last in Jim’s blue and yellow spec car and worked his way up to 7th place before the flag dropped!  That’s an impressive run.  That’s not the story though….

While at the National event in Vegas I was sitting on top of Leonard Conn’s race trailer watching the finals of the spec series race when I noticed a quiet older lady next to me cheering for John.  Well, it turns out this respectable woman who looked like she would be right at home on the front lawn of the White House was John’s mother, who had traveled with John to watch him race!  I realized that the older you get the more difficult traveling is and I remarked to myself how cool it was that John’s mom was here (keep in mind John is no teenager).

Then I just freaked out when I realized we were 15 feet in the air perched on top of a race trailer where the only means of ascent/descent was a rickety aluminum rung ladder!  How Mrs. McIver got up here and was acting like she was home watching TV just blew me away… What a cool Mom!

John’s mother sent us a wonderful note and some good photos that we wanted to share.  The FFR family is a large and inclusive one.  I am constantly amazed at the fellowship and genuine niceness of FFR customers, racers and their families.  We have a great company and fantastic products, but more than anything, we have the best community of people you will ever be lucky enough to meet.  Hats off to John, his mom, and all the FFR faithful who make this job the best in the world.
