The Factory Five Family
A Personal Note from Dave Smith

I wanted to take a moment away from the daily grind to tell all of you a story and to ask for your help.

The other day two dramatic things happened within hours of each other.  The morning began with the terrible news that one of our customers, Preston Kunda, had lost his beautiful daughter Miranda.  The full details are posted on the website FFCobra, a customer-based internet forum.  The words are true and speak of unimaginable sadness far beyond words.  The news is devastating to everyone here at Factory Five, and we are all filled with terrible grief and sympathy for Preston and his family as they face this terrible tragedy.

Hours after speaking with one of my guys here about Preston and his daughter, I settled into my desk and started going thru the mail and messages.  The first letter I opened up was from a guy named Peter Walton.  Peter, for those of you who don’t know him, is one of the very first FFR customers.  My brother Mark and I built his kit ourselves and delivered it up to his shop in New Hampshire on Christmas Eve 1995.  In the letter from Peter was a nice note and a check for $2,000 made payable to the CF Foundation on behalf of Team Jenny.

As some of you know, my wife Denise and I have a daughter named Jennifer who is battling a fatal genetic disease called Cystic Fibrosis.  Our family has received a huge amount of love and support from friends, customers, relatives and strangers.  The difference that this love and support has made is simply immeasurable.  In our daily fight to help our daughter live as long as possible, we have been carried by our faith in God and by the expression of love from our family, friends, and the FFR community.

As a parent of a child who has a fatal disease, and as someone who has witnessed close friends deal with the loss of a child, I am witness to the incredible healing and sustaining power of love, friendship and community.  With that in mind I am asking for your help.

The Factory Five community has come together many times before to support our own in tough times.  When our boys Seth and Joe went to Iraq they received tons of support and it helped.  The Kunda family is in need of our support now.  I am asking that you take a moment to send Preston and his wife Arlene a note or email of support and to remember Miranda in your prayers.

Preston and his wife have set up a charitable fund in Miranda’s’ memory if you are interested in making a donation.

Jenny Update:

Our little Jenny is doing well.  She turned seven last December and is in first grade.  Recently she had a successful surgery at Children’s Hospital to remove infection in her sinus and lungs.  We continue the fight each day, strengthened by so many, and loving every moment we have together.
