65 Roadster Mk 3

Safety Features

The legends of the 60’s were built not only from racing victories but from tragedies as well.  Our job is much easier today than it was for the racers of 30 years ago.  Back then, many basic safety features were either not used or not available.  We’ve added modern safety features that the original cars lacked.  Today, things like an inertia cut-off switch for the fuel pump protects the driver and occupants from fire.  Safety and reliability are areas where the modern running gear is just plain better than the original equipment.  Advances in materials means better steel, stronger rivets, and more consistent/accurate fasteners.

In racing, your equipment is sometimes the only thing that stands between you and serious injury.  Left: The aftermath of a 90 mph collision with a stopped vehicle (Thunderhill 2003).  Right: FFR’s Dave Smith unhurt after a flip at Gateway International Raceway.

You can’t fake safety.  We have a company that is single-minded in our passion for racing and performance and so safety is our daily religion.  You can trust our products because the chassis that you build as a hot rod project is the same one that our team trusts with their lives on the track.  As racers we understand the importance of building safe designs.  Safety is a combination of good engineering, correct materials, and careful construction.  Every single FFR kit is built with the images above in mind and the features listed below standard.

  • 3”Simpson brand, full racing H-harness for driver and passenger.

  • Externally mounted and  shielded fuel tank with fuel pump impact shut-off switch (from the Mustang donor).

  • Side impact bars and beefy 4” plate steel hinges with A-36 3/16” thick steel door hinge.  Frame mounted doors.

  • Collapsible steering column (similar to Mustang).

  • Driveshaft safety bars.

  • 3 point, 2” OD, .120” wall, mandrel bent, frame-mounted roll bar for driver.  Passenger roll bar is optional.

  • Front and rear energy absorbing crush  zones.

  • Energy absorbing tubular steel frame and aluminum chassis panels (not fiberglass).

  • Manufacturing controls that maintain high degree of consistency in welding and fabrication.

  • SCCA derived  footbox steel tubing protection and cockpit steel surround structure.

  • Vintage components that are individually FMVSS compliant (ie. lighting, carpets, seating material, safety glass etc)

  • Low vehicle center of gravity and balanced 45% - 55% weight distribution

  • Acceleration, turning and stopping abilities above almost any current production vehicle.

We don’t think there is a safer component car out there.  In the world of hot rods, customs and kits we stand miles above the crowd and it’s in great part due to our steadfast commitment to racing development and safety.  As the only replica company that has a dedicated racing series, we speak from a unique perspective.  We have an unmatched record of safety and a company that is committed to making sure that safety is always the top job.  The car you build will protect you to the very limits of its design.

It’s when things go wrong that you’ll be thankful for all that tube steel and aluminum
