Let the word
pass that at 6:30 PM Pacific Standard Time, this Saturday night,
April 28, 2007, we will all be firing up our engines and sending up
a fitting message to the heavens… Thanks Dick for the memories, We
love you, and Godspeed dear friend.
Many of you know by
now that Dick Smith, the winningest vintage Cobra* driver of
all-time, a racing hero, and a dear friend, was killed last week
along with his stepson Kyle, in a plane crash in California.
We have been
struggling to find a way to honor Dick and keep his memory and
legacy alive. The months ahead will give us time to come up with an
appropriate and lasting way of honoring him that his lifetime of
fellowship, skill, enthusiasm and accomplishment merit, however our
crew came up with a cool idea in the short run.
This upcoming
weekend is the Southern California Knotts Berry Farm car show and
the Huntington Beach Cruise-in. Dick was scheduled to be our VIP
guest. His spot remains at the Knotts show, and while his funeral
and memorial service are scheduled for Thursday, he will be on all
of our minds throughout the weekend events.
We thought it would
be great to have all FFR cars at the cruise-in start their engines
at 6:30 PM PST (California time) and bring on the revs for about 30
seconds or so. Our goal is to share a moment of thundering V-8
tribute to Dick Smith, a man who lived his life as an example of a
gentleman and a racer. Our plan is simple. After awards are handed
out, we will all gather at 6:30 PM sharp (miracle of modern atomic
time) and bring on the revs.
FFR customer, Paul
G. wrote on the internet forums that this thunderous tribute should
be joined by all FFR guys everywhere, and everyone who admired and
loved Dick. What a great idea!
So… Let the word
pass that at 6:30 PM exactly Pacific Standard Time, this Saturday
night we will all be firing up our engines and sending up a fitting
message to the heavens… Thanks Dick for the memories, We love you,
and Godspeed dear friend.
We are extending
this invitation to anyone and everyone, from a guy in Florida out in
his garage working on his car alone, to car clubs and gearhead
gatherings everywhere. Join us wherever you are!
It
would be great if anyone and everyone who participates to record a
thirty second clip of thunder, whether you are by yourself or with a
group, tape your tribute and send us a copy. If you would like your
tape back, send it with a self addresses return envelope and we will
make sure it gets back to you promptly.
