The weather was warm and sunny with temperatures in
the mid 70s for both days. Saturday got a cloudy start but Southern California
delivered on its reputation for blue skies and more than a few folks were in need of
the burn unit by the end of the weekend.
The fun started Saturday morning with people Factory Five customers
from all over assembling and getting their cars ready for the show. About ten cars were
local to the LA area and the rest were from Northern California, Arizona and Nevada. The
amazing thing was that as most other cars were being off loaded from trailers and flatbed
trucks, the FFR cars kept driving in one after the other. The crew from northern
California, headed up by Russ Thompson had made the drive through torrential downpours!
All told there were 21 Factory Five cars at the event.
Although the show is for all kit cars, Roadsters are the
overwhelming majority
and this year the Factory Five cars made up half of all
roadsters gathered! FFR customers from the area came to meet at the show, and attend an owners
dinner hosted by Mark and David Smith and held at the Huntington Beach Hilton Saturday
Night.
After a long day in the Sun everyone left the fairgrounds and met up
at the Hilton where the FFR hosted dinner and reception was held for over 85 customers.
The dinner lasted from 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM after which the Smith brothers had to catch a
plane back east.
The event was a testament to the strength of the West coast FFR
customers. FFR customer Jerry Nanson won an award for the under $25,000 class. FFR
customer Mike Senior was awarded the "Presidents Choice" Award for his one day
built FFR car. Unfortunately Mike had left with his wife Valerie five minutes beforehand
and the Knotts club rules state that you have to be present for the awards, so the prize
went to the second place guy.
The Knotts event is fun but there is serious talk from FFR customers
that they would like to sponsor a separate event for Roadsters only next year,
incorporating a fund raiser and perhaps some track time at the local Willow Springs
raceway.
Others at the event included Wayne Presley, Al
Solomko, Roger Stein, David and Mary Borden, Richard Malzan, Mike Fleming, Bill Fortner,
and Bill Randall.
