Stock Cars Coming to VIR Labor Day!

Alton, Va. (Aug. 4) -- A passion for stock car racing runs deep through the South, and perhaps nowhere is that passion more fervent than in Southside Virginia.  With the inaugural Stock Car Spectacular presented by Hardee's scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, VIRginial International Raceway will blend the exciting worlds of stock car racing and road racing.

The race groups for the Sept. 3-5 show include the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series, the Historic Stock Car Racing Association, the Stock Car Road Racing Championship, the American V8 Supercar Series, Factory Five Racing and Minicups.

The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will be contesting its first-ever road race during the Stock Car Spectacular presented by Hardee's.  The VIR round will be the ninth of 11 events on the 2004 schedule for the Lincoln Welders Trucks, and each team's ability to quickly adapt to road racing is sure to have a major impact on this year's hotly contested title chase.

The Historic Stock Car Racing Association features former NASCAR stockers.  The HSCRA always puts on an extremely competitive show, with paint schemes that will be immediately recognizable to stock car fans.

The Stock Car Road Racing Championship is for late model stock cars that compete exclusively on road courses.  The series runs throughout the Eastern United States and is sure to be a big hit with Southside Virginia Stock car racing fans.

The American V8 Supercar Series features a variety of modified V8-powered street cars, including Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, Firebirds, Thunderbirds, and other muscle cars.

Factory Five Racing is a road racing series for Cobra Replicas.  The Cobra is high-performance icon, and a full field of these fire-breathing Factory Five Replica roadsters guarantees an unforgettable show.

Minicups are 1/2-scale stock cars sanctioned by the Miniature Motorsports Racing Association.  The Minicups provide a springboard for young racers who aspire to big-time stock car racing.  The tube-frame cars feature fully adjustable suspensions and are powered by Honda GX390 air-cooled, single-cylinder engines.  The cars may be small, but the competition is fierce.  Like the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series, this will be the first road race in the organization's history.

Both the ARCA Lincoln Welders Turck Series and the Minicups will compete on the 1.1-mile Patriot Course, with the other groups racing on the full 3.27-mile VIR circuit.

In addition to the on-track action, there will also be a Car Show for muscle cars and hot rods at the new VIR Gallery, with judging conducted by the fans, plus Factory Five replica car show in the paddock.  Also, fans will be able to drive a lap around the VIR circuit during lunch hour in exchange for a donation to the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

VIR officials are looking forward to establishing a new Labor Day tradition in Southside Virginia, and attracting a new group of racing fans who may not be familiar with the beautiful facility located between Danville and South Boston.

"We know how popular stock car racing is in the area," said VIR general manager Cal Frye, "and we have been searching for a way to attract those great stock car racing fans to what we think is one of America's most spectacular racing facilities.  We feel the perfect solution is the Stock Car Spectacular presented by Hardee's"

"We certainly can't replace NASCAR's traditional Southern 500 at Darlington," said Frye, "but this Labor Day weekend we can offer area racing fans a fun-filled, affordable family outing packed with exciting stock car road racing that's not in California."

Advance tickets for the weekend will be available either over the telephone or online, priced at $30 for a three-day Super Ticket (including a complementary race program) and single-day tickets for Saturday and Sunday priced at $15.  At the gate, three-day Super Tickets (with program) are priced at $40, with single-day tickets priced at $10 (Friday), $20 (Saturday) and $20 (Sunday).  For advance ticket sales, call 1-888-RACE099 ext. 116 (American Express, Discover, Visa, or MasterCard.  VIR is a family-friendly facility, where children 12 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.  Spectator camping is available.
