Hot Rodtm Magazine seeks Homebuilt Heroes ?

This contest is tailor-made for the FFROG community

This is a page right out of the Factory Five playbook!

With their June issue, the editors at Hot Rod are launching a first of its kind, reader competition for feature articles on the best homebuilt cars on the planet.

Perhaps a light bulb went off during Hot Rod editor Rob Kinnan’s recent visit to Factory Five, or maybe he (like the rest of us) has been spending too much time on the Factory Five owner’s group forum – whatever the reason, this competition seems to be designed specifically for the Factory Five community of owners.  Truthfully, the fact that there is no “Best Factory Five” category indicates that Hot Rod wants to enter our cars in more than one classification.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunities that you need to take advantage of right away (like when your wife gave you the go-ahead to buy your Factory Five kit).

To sweeten the deal (as if being a cover model and instant celebrity requires more of an incentive),  Factory Five is laying out the following prizes in conjunction with the Hot Rod program:
  • $2000 CASH!
Get your Factory Five on the cover of Hot Rod magazine and we’ll send you a check for $2000!
Just to cover any loopholes – your car image has to represent at least 30% of the cover image content – one of three cars minimum.
  • $1000 CASH!
Win any one of the Hot Rod categories with a Factory Five, and Dave Smith will personally autograph a company check in the amount of $1000.
  • $100 Factory Five bucks
There really aren’t runners-up referenced in the details that we’ve seen, but should your Factory Five be mentioned in a positive light (not like those referenced in the photo tips), we’ll shoot over a $100 FFR Bucks Gift Certificate.
  • Free T-Shirt and License Plate bracket
Send us a copy of your submission for use on our website and we'll send you a cool T-Shirt and license plate bracket.

Some tips from us here at the factory (it’s not really cheating, it’s only “suggestions” from your friends in Massachusetts)

  • Best Use of Used Parts
Are they kidding us? Why not just call it the best use of a donor car to build a Factory Five!
  • Best Quickest for Cheapest
Got a supercharger or some turbos on your 5.0L?
  • Most Interesting Treatment of a Common Car
See Best Use of Used Parts
  • Best Dare to be Different
    Michael Kadie, are you listening?
  • Best High School Shop Class Rod
We've had a few of these already - you know who you are
  • Kinnan's Pick
Rob is an old school. big block, pin-drive, 100% vintage, "there's no replacement for displacement" king of guy
  • Freiburger's Pick
David leans toward modern running gear, fuel injection, ABS brakes, and power steering

The contest details in a nut shell:

  • Apply
Fill out Hot Rod’s application form – we’ve created an internet link here, or you can get it within the June magazine issue.
  • Provide Details
Add as much as you can think of.  Assume that the person reading your application doesn’t know what he/she is looking at.
  • Photos, Photos, Photos
A pictures is worth a thousand words, and since most of us simply grunt when describing our engine mods, it can’t hurt to overload your entry with extra images. (Some specific photography tips are included in the article – this is a good thing to study in advance.  Read it twice, photograph once!  No one wants to be the poor schmuck whose pics are used as the example of bad photography)
  • Enter multiple categories
Enter Chicago style!  (in the Windy City, you “vote early and vote often”)  Virtually any Factory Five worth it’s salt could quality in several categories.  You can’t win if you don’t play.
  • Get your entry in to Hot Rod by August 1, 2007
The underlying message here is at Hot Rod!  Not post-marked, “in the mail”, nor in process – at Hot Rod magazine! The door closes on August 1 – if an editor at Hot Rod does not yet have your entry, you might as well keep it for your family photo album.

We wish all of you within the FFROG community the best of luck on this - we expect to see some winners in August.
