SEMA Bills cruise across the country

Titling classification for component cars planned for a state near you

When it comes to governmental bureaucratic red tape, the goal is usually not to make things easier.  State DMVs and their vehicle registration hurdles are perfect examples of this.  In general, the more complicated and confusing the better it fits within their mission statements.

The automotive aftermarket industry organization, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), on the other hand, is dedicated to making vehicle ownership a more enjoyable experience in every way.  They’re deeply invested in the automotive ownership hobby and are working on improving every facet of ownership.  Their efforts in changing custom-vehicle and hot rod laws have been hard-fought, yet fully supported by anyone that recognizes that more sensible vehicle registration processes are possible.

One of their efforts, to reclassify custom vehicle, street rod and replica registration is a crowd favorite in these parts, but also represents a more common sense approach for this group of cars. To date nearly a dozen states have passed laws allowing owners of these unique vehicles to register their project cars by the same standards as those cars that they represent.

In 2007 alone, Arkansas, Florida and Virginia added their names to the list of states enacting a pro-hobbyist law in order to recognize replicas as a distinct titling and registration class.

This year already, Idaho has also passed a version into law, and on the docket across the nation, bills are being reviewed in Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Tennessee.  The curse of a democracy, however, is that it’s in your hands to make a difference and to convince your legislators what is important to you.  If you sit on your hands and don’t take action, then the only one to blame for continued registration woes is yourself.

The good folks at SEMA have made your job that much easier, however, by providing all of the appropriate contacts, their numbers and email addresses.  In many cases, they’ve even written a boilerplate letter for you, all you have to do is to sign it, and send it to your state representatives.  Get started today and make a difference for yourself and a hot rodder near you.
