Replica & Rod History Part 2
Two of the Best from 1982
by Dave Smith

In 1982, the Contemporary Classics C-Car Replica Company was king of the Roadster replicas and Boyd Coddington had just a few years earlier, started his shop, Hot Rods by Boyd.

In the May 2010 issue of SEMA News, this photo is shown highlighting the history of customs. I thought I would share this really cool photo with you guys as it is not only historic, but Factory Five would figure largely in the future of this photo and these two iconic models.

Behind the wheel of the blue Contemporary Roadster is Lee Kelley, then editor of Hot Rod Magazine.  Interestingly,  In 1999 Factory Five Racing purchased the assets of the Contemporary Company, including molds, jigs and tools.

On the Hot Rod side, today's Hot Rod Magazine editor, Rob Kinnan, drives a Factory Five '33 that was featured in the magazine as part of a five-day build story.

Sadly Boyd is no longer with us, but Factory Five is fast becoming one of the most popular of '33s on the market.

28 years later, Factory Five Racing has taken up the mantle of these cars.  The Mk4 Roadster and the '33 Hot Rod are our best selling models and while they look the same as the two cars in the photo, they are far superior from a technological stand point.

I was a senior in high school when this photo was taken and would have not believed this future or what I drive today!
