Tech Update GTM Axle Shaft Update
After conducting several tests on both the stock Corvette axle shaft/CV joint and the GTM axle shaft with Corvette outer CV joint, it has been determined by our supplier (GKN Driveline, the world’s leading manufacturer of automotive driveline components) that the shaft supplied is suitable for use in conjunction with the Corvette outer CV joint and clips.
Although the appearance of the GTM shaft does differ from the Corvette shaft, the functionality of the GTM shaft has been deemed no different than the stock Corvette shaft. When pressed into position, the CV will come to rest in the same location relative to the retainer on the shaft. The difference in the spline profile simply results from method of manufacture (the Corvette shaft has rolled splines whereas the splines on the GTM shaft are cut into each shaft).
When installing the CV joint on the GTM axle shaft, it is very important to proceed with caution, so you don’t break the retaining clip and it seats properly. A good way to make sure the clip will seat properly into the groove in the CV joint is to use a zip tie to close the clip to a diameter that will allow it to seat in the groove. Then, as you press the CV into place, the zip tie will be pressed off the clip as it seats itself in the groove.
