A Car for Every Occasion: Derek R.’s Type 65 Coupe

When Derek R. from Texas took delivery of his Factory Five Type 65 Coupe in October 2021, he began a full-on family build. Just six months later, the car was in “go-kart mode”. Derek shared that it gets all the looks on the highway, but what makes it special is the heart and memories that went into it.

“From wrenching with my kids to painting in the garage, (and getting the paw of approval from the family dog), every inch of this car has my family’s fingerprints on it!” Derek says.

Derek takes his daughter to a Valentine’s Day dance.

Under the hood, Derek’s Type 65 Coupe is powered by a Ford 306 small block with AFR heads, forged internals, a custom cam, Holley Sniper EFI, A/C, and power steering. The drivetrain is completed by a TKO 3550 transmission and an SN95 8.8 rear end with 3.73 gears. This setup is perfect for spirited driving and everyday errands alike.

After about 18 months of cruising in gel coat, Derek and his family entered the final phase of the build in May 2024.

Derek’s daughter poses with their family Coupe before her Valentine’s Day dance.

“It might look track-ready,” Derek jokes, “but this car’s natural habitat includes Home Depot runs, school drop-offs, date nights, taking my son to his first job, and chauffeuring my daughter to her Valentine’s Day dance.”

Derek’s Type 65 Coupe sparks conversations wherever it goes. He’s always happy to chat and share the build story with fellow enthusiasts, and that openness led to one of the most unforgettable moments of the journey so far.

Derek poses at a car event with Allen Grant!

At a recent car event, Derek had the chance to meet Allen Grant, one of the original Shelby American drivers who helped make racing history in the 1960s. Grant was part of the legendary team that piloted the original Daytona Coupe to victory over Ferrari in the 1965 FIA World Manufacturers’ Championship, the only time an American manufacturer has won the title.

“He took the time to talk with me, share stories about Carroll Shelby, his win at Monza, and even signed my car. Just an incredibly kind and humble guy,” Derek recalls. “And believe it or not, his daily driver is an F-150!”

For Derek and his family, this Factory Five Type 65 Coupe is more than a car. It’s proof that building something together makes it all the more rewarding.

Congratulations to Derek and his family on an incredible build. Here’s to many more miles of smiles, memories, and meaningful moments with your beautiful Coupe!
